Review: Swing Girls

Release Date: September 11, 2004
Genre: Comedy, Youth

Familiar Cast:

Ueno Juri - Tomoko Suzuki
(Nodame Cantabile)

Synopsis:

The motive of the film is to portray an inspirational journey of a group of students who formed  a band that serves as a cheer leading team of their school. The cause of this unexpected assignment is due to a mistake they have committed while they deliver the lunch left by the band members behind. Everyone agreed to skip their summer class which is currently taking place and volunteered instead to deliver the food. They wanted some extracurricular activities on a summer day by helping to boost the morale of the team's spirit. Unfortunately, they have messed up on their way that has caused the food to be contaminated with dirt. It disturbed the band's performance due to stomachache   and throwing up of the band members. Gladly, nothing serious occurred to them but because of this incident, the group of students are forced to take over their place as a consequence while the members are on the road to recovery.

Commentaries:

From being a clueless individual in playing an instrument to suddenly becoming a perfect example of a changed person as you learn the technique of pointing out a note takes an incredible amount of courage and hardwork. A given deadline to improve your acquired talent surely is a huge discouragement to pursue. However, as curiosity kicks in your blood while taking advantage of the opportunity, you get to excuse yourself from your summer class which you find boring and just a waste of time. Probably, the following reasons pushed everyone to accept the challenge despite the anticipation of a terrible outcome ahead. Nonetheless, everyone really tried hard on what is supposed to work on until they achieve their goal; and if not, a satisfactory gift to oneself and to the team.

Remember in our life, there are days wherein the favors seem to be overwhelming but at the same time, there are instances wherein it goes against our willpower. And that's life. In this film, there are times where everything just seems to be obscure, otherwise they should be confident all throughout. However, they need to be together as a team while they improve through their individual skills. These wouldn't be possible without proper training and attitude to relate to each other. Tough times is a given challenge but it's up to oneself on how to react in such situations. This film is basically telling you that nothing is impossible; that no matter how slow you go, as long as you don't stop - in reference to one of the Confucian principles. As words of encouragement are put:  you don't have to see the whole staircase to make a step; and in order to keep your balance, you have to keep on moving. These references are basically portrayed in the film.

My Rating:
Very Good to Excellent

I really loved the team work shown with the leadership by Tomoko. Even with her presence which is evident to their success, it didn't create a shadow over the contribution of others The maturity of the characters from being playful to taking things unto the next level is one of its highlights. Basically, I didn't feel that the story being centered around Tomoko (Ueno Juri) which I absolutely admire because it's a hard task to fulfill most especially that she's the only cast I'm familiar with. Other than that, I think I had a good laugh while watching as well and you should too! I'm sure.
